Figure Sculpture

There is something wild about sculpting the human body while living in a human body. Our own bodies are inescapable and yet there is something so ancient and unknown about them.

For me, the combination of observing a model and working with the raw, earthy materiality of clay is a sort of reliving of our primary mythologies, the ones where our ancestors were built from clay by the gods. Our bodies bear not only the evidence of our personal histories but also the lives of our ancestors. They carry our physical weight and while also carrying the weight of cultural ideologies, judgements, stories and philosophies. Every body is unique, every body carries the history of the world within it.
